Mother Tongue presents seven contemporary video artists, women, whose works blend into a polyphonic reflection on the political situation in Turkey today, where freedom of expression and rights for women, migrants and ethnic minorities are under pressure. Today´sTurkey has been moving towards more religious conservatism and increasing use of force against protesters and critics. This situation obviously affects contemporary art. These artists are important contributors to Turkey´s contemporary art scene, regarded as one of the most thriving in the world. The city of Istanbul especially, Oriental and European at the same time, has become a hub for social and political art.

The title, Mother Tongue, refers to the Turkish writer Emine Sevgi Özdamar´s short story about the experience of a double identity - born in Turkey and growing up in Germany.

Mother Tongue is curated by Malin Barth och Brynjar Bjerkem för institusjonene Stiftelsen 3,14 och TrAP. The exhibition tour is produced by Sveriges Konstföreningar and Norske Kunstforeninger and is showed in Norrköping by The Museum of Forgetting.

The Museum of Forgetting has since 2007 created art exhibitions and spaces for reflection on cultural and political forgetting. The Museum is run by Erik Berggren and Kosta Economou. We thank Norrköping City Library – Birgitta Hjerpe, Ola Gustavsson and Saeid Zenhari as well as Sveriges konstföreningar and, not least, the students at the Master Program of Ethnic and Migration Studies, Linköping University, who have been critical in setting up the show.
